Learning Teaching Healing

This one year fellowship is designed to provide formal training for one fellow per year in the full spectrum of Women's Health. Fellows will work in Fayetteville, North Carolina with faculty members affiliated with Duke University. Experiences will include:

  • Gynecological procedures (including but not limited to colposcopy, cryotherapy, IUD placement, and Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP)) while working alongside Cape Fear Valley/Duke Ob/Gyn faculty
  • Management of labor and delivery
  • Longitudinal experiences in breast disease
  • Reproductive Endocrinology
  • Mental Health
  • Continuity family medicine experiences
  • You will be taught lecture skills, small group teaching skills and clinical teaching skills by faculty who have completed faculty

    Clinical Activities

    • 1/2 day weekly of continuity family medicine
    • 1 1/2 days/week gynecologic procedures clinic
    • 1 day /week labor and delivery
    • 1/2 days/week rotation elective
    • 1 days/week scholarly activity
    • 1/2 day/week flexible based upon Fellow's interests
    • Call once weekly (OB/Family Medicine Service)
    • Family Medicine call 6 weekends/year

    About Fayetteville

    Fayetteville, NC boasts a population of about 172,000 which makes it the sixth largest municipality in North Carolina. It has received the exclusive All-America City designation. Home to Fort Bragg Army and Pope Air Force bases, there are a multitude of activities in the community. Fayetteville is home to many semi-professional sports teams including The Swamp Dogs (baseball), The Fire Antz (hockey), The Patriots (basketball) and The Guard (arena football).  There are festivals such as the springtime Dogwood Festival and the autumn International Folk Festival which are enjoyed by all members of the community.  An extremely family-friendly town, there are many activities geared toward children.

    In addition, Fayetteville is close to the beach for an easy day trip.  The mountains make an ideal weekend getaway destination as well.  Raleigh/Durham offers many cultural activities that are easily accessible.

    Fellowship Goals

    The mission of the Southern Regional Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is to superbly train health care providers to meet the needs of patients inour nine-county region.  The Women's Health Fellowship will prepare you to be an excellent women's health care provider and you will find that you fill an important need in our region.

    By the end of the one year Fellowship, you will be an expert in women's health:

    • Competent in holistic care of women
    • Comfortable with medical, psychological and social issues unique to the care of women
    • Competent in gynecologic procedures including colposcopy (cervix/vagina/vulva), cryosurgery of the cervix, LEEP procedures and office diagnostic hysteroscopy
    • Competent in low risk obstetrical care
    • Competent in evaluation of pediatric gynecologic disorders
    • Competent in family planning, including diaphragm fitting and IUD insertion/removal
    • Exposure to pelvic organ prolapse/incontinence management including non-surgical treatments (pessaries)
    • Optional increased exposure to high risk obstetrics and/or operative vaginal deliveries
    • Optional experience in child sexual abuse clinic
    • Continued longitudinal family medicine
    • Elective rotations to increase awareness in personal interest areas (e.g. reproductive endocrinology, breast health, mental health, etc)
    • Completion of a scholarly project of your choosing
    • Mentoring with local women leaders
    • Competent in teaching issues of Women's Health to Family Medicine residents.  Faculty development opportunities including teaching Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics.
